Also - this "stimulus" for infrastructure is on top of the already planned spending on such things that happen each year. (The so called zero based budgeting of the Clinton years has long since died -- now we are back to the Johnsonian way of doing things -- start with what you spent last year and just add on from that.)

I gave my $50+ to public transit last week, in Boston. :) Seriously, funding public transportation projects is exactly what I thought of first as a great idea if we're going to pour government money out like water. It's the kind of thing that's really hard to do privately, or even locally, not only because of the logistics involved but because the return comes so long after the initial investment. I believe the Washington Metro is still being subsidized.

Unfortunately, for the same reason it's not likely to be part of a "solution" that is focused on immediate gratification. There are road projects that are already in the pipeline, but major public transportation projects will need to be developed. But even road-building at least gets us something concrete, if you'll pardon my saying so. I love to see the beautiful WPA bridges when we drive on the Merritt Parkway in Connecticut.
