{"id":282,"date":"2011-01-26T21:42:22","date_gmt":"2011-01-26T20:42:22","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.morbidcornflakes.ch\/thduggies_blog\/?p=282"},"modified":"2011-01-26T21:42:22","modified_gmt":"2011-01-26T20:42:22","slug":"more-on-guns-and-people-dying","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.thduggie.com\/thduggies_blog\/2011\/more-on-guns-and-people-dying","title":{"rendered":"More on Guns and People Dying"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>I wrote about how <a target=\"_blank\" title=\"Swiss Guns Do Kill People\" href=\"http:\/\/www.thduggie.com\/thduggies_blog\/?p=279\">Swiss guns kill people<\/a> a few days back, and have since received additional information I found interesting enough to post.\u00c2\u00a0 Both graphs come from a leaflet the socialist party sent out with the intention of getting people to vote for tougher gun regulation.\u00c2\u00a0 While they are quite fuzzy about what happens to current gun owners, which I dislike, the graphs seem pretty clear.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"firearms and suicides\" title=\"firearms and suicides\" src=\"http:\/\/www.thduggie.com\/thduggies_blog\/http:\/\/blog.thduggie.com\/images\/Schusswaffen&#038;Suizide.jpg\" \/><br \/>\nThe grey bar shows the percentage of households with a gun, and the red bar the percentage of suicides with firearms (as opposed to other methods).\u00c2\u00a0 There does seem to at least be a correlation between gun permeation and firearms suicide rate.\u00c2\u00a0 However, Japan shows that a low firearms suicide rate doesn&#8217;t necessarily mean a low suicide rate.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" align=\"top\" alt=\"Conscription and gun deaths in Switzerland\" title=\"Conscription and gun deaths in Switzerland\" src=\"http:\/\/www.thduggie.com\/thduggies_blog\/http:\/\/blog.thduggie.com\/images\/Armee&#038;Schusswaffentote.jpg\" \/><br \/>\nHere we have (in black, left scale) the head count of the Swiss army, and (in red, right scale) the number of deaths by firearms in Switzerland, from 1995 to 2008.\u00c2\u00a0 It shows a correlation between the number of soldiers (and hence the number of rifles in active use) and the number of deaths by firearms.\u00c2\u00a0 Before 2004, it was fairly easy to keep the weapon upon leaving the army; it was made harder after that.\u00c2\u00a0 Because many kept their firearms upon leaving the military, the drop in weapons available in Swiss households was not nearly as sharp as the drop in enrolment.<\/p>\n<p>Any thoughts?<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>I wrote about how Swiss guns kill people a few days back, and have since received additional information I found interesting enough to post.\u00c2\u00a0 Both graphs come from a leaflet the socialist party sent out with the intention of getting people to vote for tougher gun regulation.\u00c2\u00a0 While they are quite fuzzy about what happens to current gun owners, which I dislike, the graphs seem pretty clear.
