Once in a blue moon Yahoo! news will have an article worth reading.\u00c2\u00a0 This one’s entitled “10 Things Extraordinary People Say Every Day<\/a>,” and while I think this behavior shouldn’t be extraordinary, I do think there are good points in there.\u00c2\u00a0 Here’s the executive summary.<\/p>\n

  1. “Here’s what I’m thinking.”\u00c2\u00a0 Don’t command: suggest and engage.<\/li>\n
  2. “I was wrong.”\u00c2\u00a0 Admit mistakes.<\/li>\n
  3. “That was awesome.”\u00c2\u00a0 Make honest compliments.\u00c2\u00a0 They are a huge encouragement.<\/li>\n
  4. “You’re welcome.”\u00c2\u00a0 Accept thanks and praise gracefully.<\/li>\n
  5. “Can you help me?”\u00c2\u00a0 Four words to show respect and get something done.<\/li>\n
  6. “I’m sorry.”\u00c2\u00a0 A great way to make a fresh start.<\/li>\n
  7. “Can you show me?”\u00c2\u00a0 Four words to praise a person and learn something.<\/li>\n
  8. “Let me give you a hand.”\u00c2\u00a0 Offer specific help.<\/li>\n
  9. “I love you.”\u00c2\u00a0 Powerful stuff – use responsibly.<\/li>\n
  10. Nothing.\u00c2\u00a0 Say only what is helpful to the other person, not hurtful or thoughtless.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n

    I disagree somewhat on the elaboration on number 6.\u00c2\u00a0 The author makes a good point: a fresh start is easiest to achieve if the person apologizing doesn’t explain his actions.\u00c2\u00a0 If the way forward doesn’t require the explanation, then I agree with the author.\u00c2\u00a0 Swallow your pride, your need to justify, and your apology will effect more.\u00c2\u00a0 But if the action that requires apology is a reaction to the other’s habitual destructive behavior, then at some point that topic needs to be broached.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
