Two news snippets I found interesting:
We owe spam to an infinitesimal number of dimwits, and US kids aren’t nearly as inactive as their reputation (page 50). Worse yet: Swiss kids rank last!

You’d better move to the US, so your kids will be active! (How’s that for logic, huh?)
As far as I’m concerned, they don’t need to be restricted to good logic to encourage them to move to the US. 🙂
I didn’t do much more than skim the report, as I usually find such measures of “child well-being” more aggravating than useful, since whoever decides these things has a much different idea from my own of what’s good for a child. I did note with amusement the statement “most…children do not like school,” which I might pull out some day for my running argument on the subject with my other son-in-law.
I also found interesting the definition of living in overcrowded conditions as having more people in the house than the number of rooms, not counting bathrooms or kitchens — and I assume also not counting basements or attics, though this is not explicit. By this definition, many happy, healthy households today are depriving their children, as did most of our ancestors.
I noted the overcrowding as well. There’s plenty I don’t understand, such as for instance why everyone wants to be like Finland just because they scored minimally higher in the education achievement tests. Or how we can eliminate overcrowding without a huge negative ecological impact.
